LOAVES & FISHES MINISTRIES, INC.

June 2006 CALENDAR

Please Note:   We’ve noticed that some of our volunteers are eating at the steam table.  Often a small serving is put in a Styrofoam bowl and then eaten at the table.  This is NEVER OK!  When we eat, chew gum, suck candy, etc. saliva can be shared too easily.  Eating anywhere in the service area is one of the Health Department’s most rigidly applied rules.  You are welcome to share food and your time together from 12:45 to 1:00 PM, but you must sit at a dining table – and enjoy!  Thanks!

Special Recognition  - St. Joseph’s – The Cathedral – has partnered with Loaves and Fishes since our first year in operation.  They are one of the original organizing groups who helped plan this offering.  Their volunteer group worked with us one day a month for over ten years and when that group could no longer take part, we worked out a new plan.  That plan meant Loaves and Fishes bought and planned the meal and Bank of America volunteers assumed the volunteer service for the day.  This has been an incredibly successful plan.  St. Joseph’s assumes the cost of the meal every month and has done so every time for the past thirteen years.  They are wonderful supporters of our efforts to help feed poor and needy in Hartford.  Great thanks and kudos are due.

The Walk Against Hunger - Final numbers not in yet.

Sunday, May 7 was a bright sunny day for the Walk Against Hunger.  We had a possibility of 20 teams walking for Loaves and Fishes, and we hope we raised over $20,000.  Look for final numbers and teams in next month’s calendar letter.  We will let team captains know the results as soon as we have them.

We want to thank team captains and walkers from:

VOLUNTEER GUIDELINES

1.      Dress appropriately for a soup kitchen—no shorts, short skirts or revealing necklines.

 2.       Flats and rubber sole shoes are appropriate for serving.  NO heels will be allowed on our tile floor due to “slip potential” and the liability issues.

 3.       Please treat everyone with dignity and respect.

 4.       Please remember that many people in our programs are recovering from substance abuse.  We ask you to refrain from using alcohol or drugs prior to coming in to volunteer.

 5.       No smoking is allowed in the Loaves & Fishes facility.

 6.       Please follow general health and sanitation rules while working in Loaves & Fishes’ kitchen and dining room.

 7.       If you notice a client having any kind of problems please notify staff immediately.  Do not try to handle the situation yourself.

 8.       Please do not offer to take clients to your home or do any special favors for any individual.

 9.       Please do not give or lend money to clients.

 10.  Please do not bring valuables.  Pocketbooks can be locked in our storage room, but the less you bring the less you have to deal with.  We cannot be responsible for your lost or stolen articles.

11.  At Loaves & Fishes, you are a volunteer and may not act as professional staff at any time.  Please refer any client issues directly to staff members.
